can speech therapy cure stuttering: Self-therapy for the Stutterer Malcolm Fraser, 2002 Malcolm Fraser knew from personal experience what the person who stutters is up against. His introduction to stuttering corrective procedures first came at the age of fifteen under the direction of Frederick Martin, M.D., who at that time was Superintendent of Speech Correction for the New York City schools. A few years later, he worked with J. Stanley Smith, L.L.D., a stutterer and philanthropist, who, for altruistic reasons, founded the Kingsley Clubs in Philadelphia and New York that were named after the English author, Charles Kingsley, who also stuttered. The Kingsley Clubs were small groups of adult stutterers who met one night a week to try out treatment ideas then in effect. In fact, they were actually practicing group therapy as they talked about their experiences and exchanged ideas. This exchange gave each of the members a better understanding of the problem. The founder often led the discussions at both clubs. In 1928 Malcolm Fraser joined his older brother Carlyle who founded the NAPA-Genuine Parts Company that year in Atlanta, Georgia. He became an important leader in the company and was particularly outstanding in training others for leadership roles. In 1947, with a successful career under way, he founded the Stuttering Foundation of America. In subsequent years, he added generously to the endowment so that at the present time, endowment income covers over fifty percent of the operating budget. In 1984, Malcolm Fraser received the fourth annual National Council on Communicative Disorders' Distinguished Service Award. The NCCD, a council of 32 national organizations, recognized the Foundation's efforts in adding to stutterers', parents', clinicians', and the public's awareness and ability to deal constructively with stuttering. can speech therapy cure stuttering: Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders Glen O. Gabbard, 2014-05-05 The definitive treatment textbook in psychiatry, this fifth edition of Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders has been thoroughly restructured to reflect the new DSM-5® categories, preserving its value as a state-of-the-art resource and increasing its utility in the field. The editors have produced a volume that is both comprehensive and concise, meeting the needs of clinicians who prefer a single, user-friendly volume. In the service of brevity, the book focuses on treatment over diagnostic considerations, and addresses both empirically-validated treatments and accumulated clinical wisdom where research is lacking. Noteworthy features include the following: Content is organized according to DSM-5® categories to make for rapid retrieval of relevant treatment information for the busy clinician. Outcome studies and expert opinion are presented in an accessible way to help the clinician know what treatment to use for which disorder, and how to tailor the treatment to the patient. Content is restricted to the major psychiatric conditions seen in clinical practice while leaving out less common conditions and those that have limited outcome research related to the disorder, resulting in a more streamlined and affordable text. Chapters are meticulously referenced and include dozens of tables, figures, and other illustrative features that enhance comprehension and recall. An authoritative resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses, and an outstanding reference for students in the mental health professions, Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders, Fifth Edition, will prove indispensable to clinicians seeking to provide excellent care while transitioning to a DSM-5® world. |

can speech therapy cure stuttering: Stutter Speech Therapy Techniques A N Okonoboh, Dave McAllen, 2020-05-28 Is it possible to stop stuttering within 10 days? What is the topmost dream of your life? As a stutterer, you don't want me or anyone else to sympathize when you talk.In our book STUTTER SPEECH THERAPY TECHNIQUES, we have you in mind. We know that how to stop stuttering is a question that cools the stuttering communities around the world. In fact, we realize that in stammering groups, sufferers are told not to bother anymore about recovery, that such effort is more devastating than the speech impediment itself. Well, our introduction to this workbook has well inspiring stories to help allay your fears. Now we will give you a gist of the features of STUTTER SPEECH THERAPY TECHNIQUES that makes it works so fast for stuttering recovery.First, this book is based on years-long study of real stammer overcomers. So, the contents is not intellectual laboratory theories. That is why it works for real people. The central key is CONSCIOUSNESS which runs as a thread through the chapters. Around this, we build other elements that are worthy of recognition in their positive or negative roles in our speeches. E.g Breath Control, breathing from the chest or from the lungs, the art of speaking, dealing with common obstacles, how to use your speech schemes, etc.In the Art of Speaking section, we addresse all issues of speech-language pathology, SLP, cognitive behavioral therapy, anxiety relief, stammer self cure, as well as the question of who will help me find my voice. The same section continues to replicated it's effectiveness in the challenge for the teaching of talking, therapy for kids, even for serious cases such as with those who think that their situation is beyond stammering. And we raised a red signal on how in delivering their parental care, parents or guardians need to be observant for any evidence of early childhood stammering. Our practicals are very easy to walk through. We developed these strategies and activities to promote your child's language development. They are step by step social skills to help toddlers and adults learn to do expert speech. This will make their expressions well-spoken and clear. So, at home, parents guardians and therapists should see this book as a valuable guide to speech. The book also deals with regression, semantic noise, slurring, muffling, and what we call brake failure. You will find that it is a complete program for getting skills to articulate better and making good of speaking. That is why many users call it, The Speech Teacher's Handbook. Finally, we dedicate a full section to the parents. At the conclusion of that section, we appeal to all parents with children throughout the globe to stop making the mistake of leaving the matter of stammer in their child to chance. It should not be hoped that he will give it up as he grows. True, stammer is short-lived in most children even those with the gene. Still, knowing which child will carry it further than the early stage, is as difficult as trying to identify a cock among unhatched eggs. |

can speech therapy cure stuttering: Knotted Tongues Benson Bobrick, 2011-01-11 A former stutterer, Benson Bobrick here offers his perspective on the condition as well as an interesting history of how physicians have treated it. Stuttering, or stammering (the terms are interchangeable clinically), occurs four times more frequently in males and ranges from mild hesitation in speech to severe disability. Hot irons were applied to stutterers' lips in the Middle Ages, and in the mid-19th century, risky tongue operations were performed in failed attempts to effect a cure. Bobrick discusses famous stutterers Charles Darwin, Henry James, Winston Churchill, and Jimmy Stewart, and he describes the adverse impact of their condition on their lives. In this century, psychological trauma has often been cited as the cause of stuttering, but recent evidence points to a genetic disorder involving a disturbed auditory function. Therapeutic practices differ, but the author credits a voice feedback system with bringing his condition under control. |

can speech therapy cure stuttering: Stuttering Joseph S. Kalinowski, Tim Saltuklaroglu, 2005-11 This textbook presents a new paradigm for understanding the nature and treatment of stuttering based on recent discoveries in neuroscience. The authors illustrate how visible stuttering manifestations are actually a solution to a central problem, acting as a compensatory mechanism for a central involuntary block, rather than a problem in themselves. This book features methods that reduce stuttering by inhibiting this central block, through the use of sensory and motor tools, notably mirror neurons, and shows readers that stuttering is not a condition that can be effortlessly trained out of the system or eliminated via simple speech retraining. |

can speech therapy cure stuttering: Stutterer Interrupted Nina G., 2019-08-06 Nina G bills herself as “The San Francisco Bay Area’s Only Female Stuttering Comedian.” On stage, she encounters the occasional heckler, but off stage she is often confronted with people’s comments toward her stuttering; listeners completing her sentences, inquiring, “Did you forget your name?” and giving unwanted advice like “slow down and breathe” are common. (As if she never thought about slowing down and breathing in her over thirty years of stuttering!) When Nina started comedy nearly ten years ago, she was the only woman in the world of stand-up who stuttered—not a surprise, since men outnumber women four to one amongst those who stutter and comedy is a male-dominated profession. Nina’s brand of comedy reflects the experience of many people with disabilities in that the problem with disability isn’t in the person with it but in a society that isn’t always accessible or inclusive. |
can speech therapy cure stuttering: Mindfulness & Stuttering Ellen-Marie Silverman, 2012 Mindfulness & Stuttering provides information to help the reader decide whether or not mindfulness may be a congenial strategy to help resolve a stuttering problem. Recent research verifies that mindfulness, a means to greater self-awareness and well-being practiced for more than 2,500 years, facilitates desired personal change. From reducing stress to lessening negative self-talk and by improving the ability to learn new skills, practicing mindfulness leads to living with greater ease. Ellen-Marie Silverman, Ph.D., a speech pathologist for more than 40 years and a Fellow of the American Speech-Hearing-Language Association, has been practicing mindfulness for more than 16 years and has used the practice with her own stuttering problem to speak and communicate with greater ease. In Mindfulness & Stuttering, she addresses questions and concerns people may have about the practice of mindfulness and its application to stuttering problems and describes the use of six mindfulness techniques --- shamatha-vipassana, working with shenpa, maitri, lojong, using gatha's, and tonglen --- as secular practices. She shows how mindfulness can help address two concerns people with a covert or overt stuttering problem may have, Fear of Stuttering and Struggling to Speak, and offers suggestions for constructively managing impatience, boredom, and relapse, obstacles that can arise when learning to speak with greater ease. Dr. Silverman is the author of Relief From Stuttering. Laying the Groundwork to Speak with Greater Ease. |
can speech therapy cure stuttering: Words Fail Us Jonty Claypole, 2021-01-14 'TIMELY' David Mitchell 'MOVING ... REMARKABLE' SUNDAY TIMES 'ONE OF THOSE RARE BOOKS I HADN'T REASLISED I'D BEEN WAITING FOR UNTIL I READ IT.' Owen Sheers 'OPEN-MINDED, THOUGHTFUL AND WISE... A LIBERATING BOOK' Colm Toibin In an age of polished TED talks and overconfident political oratory, success seems to depend upon charismatic public speaking. But what if hyper-fluency is not only unachievable but undesirable? Jonty Claypole spent fifteen years of his life in and out of extreme speech therapy. From sessions with child psychologists to lengthy stuttering boot camps and exposure therapies, he tried everything until finally being told the words he'd always feared: 'We can't cure your stutter.' Those words started him on a journey towards not only making peace with his stammer but learning to use it to his advantage. Here, Jonty argues that our obsession with fluency could be hindering, rather than helping, our creativity, authenticity and persuasiveness. Exploring other speech conditions, such as aphasia and Tourette's, and telling the stories of the 'creatively disfluent' - from Lewis Carroll to Kendrick Lamar - Jonty explains why it's time for us to stop making sense, get tongue tied and embrace the life-changing power of inarticulacy. |

can speech therapy cure stuttering: Understanding Stuttering Nathan Lavid, 2003 Stuttering is an affliction that affects every ethnicity and every culture equally, some sixty million people worldwide. Five percent of children stutter. Typically this debilitating condition emerges when a child is between the ages of two and six. Twenty percent of these children will continue to stutter as adults. Although it is so pervasive, there is great misunderstanding about stuttering. Socially isolating those it strikes, the disorder prevents them from the kind of candid discussions that would help them gain an understanding of it. In turn, social isolation creates misconceptions. In Understanding Stuttering a writer who is both a practicing physician and former researcher on stuttering examines the medical roots of the problem and, hoping to bring alleviation, shares his findings. He defines stuttering as a medical condition that is neurologically based or inherited. In clear language he explains the basics of brain anatomy and function, tells of the latest scientific advances in diagnosis and treatment of stuttering, and explains the difference in acquired stuttering and Tourette syndrome. Using examples from his practice, he details effective treatments, including speech therapy and medications. He discusses the most promising new research and tells how the findings of this research will improve treatments and provide a possible cure. Understanding Stuttering concludes with practical tips on how to converse with those who stutter and lists organizations that provide additional information and support. Nathan Lavid, a former faculty member at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, is in private psychiatric practice in southern California. |

The second section focuses more directly on the evaluation of treatment options and treatment outcomes, and addresses both direct and indirect treatments for children and adults. The 12 contributions are based on papers presented at a State-of-the-Art Conference held at the University of Georgia, March 1997. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR. |

can speech therapy cure stuttering: More Than Fluency: the Social, Emotional, and Cognitive Dimensions of Stuttering Barbara J. Amster, Evelyn R. Klein, 2018-04-27 More Than Fluency: The Social, Emotional, and Cognitive Dimensions of Stutteringprovides a thoughtful and contemporary framework for speech-language pathologists and others working with people who stutter. The text focuses on the social, emotional, and cognitive realms of stuttering and offers new insights and applications based on research in the field. It guides the reader through theoretical discussions about the social experiences, emotional complications, and cognitive interpretations that often influence the person who stutters. The text also offers practical strategies for intervention from contributing authors who are prominent theorists, researchers, and practitioners in the field of fluency and stuttering. In line with the current multifactorial view of stuttering, More Than Fluency emphasizes the social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of stuttering, drawing important connections between them. The authors present a variety of therapeutic interventions and techniques along with practical guidelines that have been designed to alleviate distress in those who stutter. Although these interventions differ in approach, each offers their own roadmap to support and empower people who stutter. The idea for this book grew out of the insights gained from listening to both clients and graduate students. Clients wanted to talk about their life experiences as a person who stutters. Graduate students often described their worry and uncertainty when dealing with the emotional and social issues of their clients who stutter. Similarly, many practicing speech-language pathologists also have concerns about treating people who stutter, especially regarding the social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of the disorder, areas not typically taught in traditional coursework. More Than Fluency was developed for practicing speech-language pathologists and other professionals who evaluate and treat people who stutter. It is also intended to be an academic textbook used in graduate courses on fluency and stuttering. This text provides a collection of well-thought-out programs and approaches that help treat the whole person, not just his or her stuttering. The authors believe that this is best practice because successfully treating a person who stutters encompasses treating more than fluency. |

can speech therapy cure stuttering: The Perfect Stutter Paul H Brocklehurst, 2021-05-28 After failing at university, socially isolated and driven by his stuttering to the point of despair, an unexpected encounter with a book about Zen provided a glimmer of hope. Then, little by little his fortune changed, and the stutter - which, previously had posed the greatest obstacle - became the catalyst for the development of a new and profoundly liberating perspective on life. Interwoven with Brocklehurst's personal story, The Perfect Stutter explores the nature of language and verbal communication, the significance of mistakes, and the roles that values and value-judgements play in our lives. In so doing, the book highlights the importance of our deepest desires and their relevance to our understanding of what it means to be a human being. About the Author After his stuttering ceased to be a problem, Paul Brocklehurst returned to university to study Speech Therapy, then Psycholinguistics, and then finally, he completed a doctorate in Experimental Psychology. As a researcher, he is best known for his investigation of the nature of inner speech, the relationship between stuttering and the fear of communication failure, and for his development of the Variable Release Threshold Hypothesis of stuttering. In recent years he has become an active member of the stuttering self-help community and is well known for his promotion of mindfulness in people who stutter and for his work as director of the Stammering Self-Empowerment Programme. After retiring from academic life, he moved to the French Pyrenees where he now divides his time between walking in the mountains, growing organic vegetables, running mindfulness groups, and writing. |
