coppell early care and education: Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children from Birth Through Age 8, Fourth Edition (Fully Revised and Updated) Naeyc, 2021-08 The long-awaited new edition of NAEYC's book Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs is here, fully revised and updated! Since the first edition in 1987, it has been an essential resource for the early childhood education field. Early childhood educators have a professional responsibility to plan and implement intentional, developmentally appropriate learning experiences that promote the social and emotional development, physical development and health, cognitive development, and general learning competencies of each child served. But what is developmentally appropriate practice (DAP)? DAP is a framework designed to promote young children's optimal learning and development through a strengths-based approach to joyful, engaged learning. As educators make decisions to support each child's learning and development, they consider what they know about (1) commonality in children's development and learning, (2) each child as an individual (within the context of their family and community), and (3) everything discernible about the social and cultural contexts for each child, each educator, and the program as a whole. This latest edition of the book is fully revised to underscore the critical role social and cultural contexts play in child development and learning, including new research about implicit bias and teachers' own context and consideration of advances in neuroscience. Educators implement developmentally appropriate practice by recognizing the many assets all young children bring to the early learning program as individuals and as members of families and communities. They also develop an awareness of their own context. Building on each child's strengths, educators design and implement learning settings to help each child achieve their full potential across all domains of development and across all content areas.

coppell early care and education: Curriculum Development for Students with Mild Disabilities Carroll J. Jones, 2010 Many teachers of students with mild disabilities experience difficulty writing IEPs, and they lack a foundation in the regular education curriculum of academic skills and sequences associated with each grade level. This book was designed to provide this foundation. Presented in the form of scope and sequence charts that can be used as objectives for the State Frameworks (goals and benchmarks), this resource assists in preparing IEPs, including the new process of identification of children with disabilities through their responses to intervention (RTI). An additional focus is on the impact of federal laws (IDEA and NCLB) on the curriculum and assessment in schools today. The book has been reorganized into ten chapters, including: historical perspectives; early childhood special education curricula; oral expression curricula; reading and listening curricula; written expression curricula; mathematics curricula; educational technology curricula K-12; social and self competence curricula; science curricula; and evaluation reports/case studies (Appendix). The scope and sequence charts were modified to include current national education standards and benchmarks and the skills in each of the academic areas that require annual state assessment. These charts will assist teachers in modifying the general education curriculum for students with mild disabilities and to write complete Individual Education Programs, using age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate teaching and assessment materials. Chapter summaries, included for review purposes, also serve as selective and motivational reading. With special education teachers in short supply and the demands on their time so great, this book will provide a valuable resource for cutting the clutter and moving to the heart of the teaching process: determining what skills students need to move effectively to the next level.

coppell early care and education: Big and Little Are Best Friends Michael Garland, 2017-05-09 New York Times bestselling author/artist tells the story of two best friends who are opposites in almost every way! Big is an elephant, Little is a mouse. Big enjoys soft music, warm weather, and small bites of savory foods. But Little prefers a loud drum jam, icy skiing weather, and mass quantities of sweets! Can two who are so different be best friends? This charming, rhyming concept book about opposites reminds us that in the end, best friends can be different as night and day--and they don't need to change for anyone!

coppell early care and education: The Popcorn Dragon Jane Thayer, 1989-08-22 You could hardly blame Dexter, ordinarily a well-behaved young dragon, for showing off when he suddenly found that he could make clouds of smoke. The temptation is irresistible, but Dexter quickly becomes insufferable. First he watches his own reflection in the river in order to admire the smoke. Then he puffs it in the faces of his friends: the zebra, the giraffe, and the elephant. He even blows smoke rings around his own tail to prove how clever he is. Soon Dexter has no friends left. He is a very lonely dragon indeed, until quite by accident he discovers a way his talent can be used to win back his playmates. This wonderful story -- first published in 1953 -- will delight both young readers and their parents, and so will Lisa McCue's appealing new pictures of this lovable show-off.

coppell early care and education: Growing up Indigenous: Developing Effective Pedagogy for Education and Development R.M. Nichol, 2011-07-23 This is a fascinating account of traditional socialisation and Indigenous forms of learning in Australia and Melanesia. It draws from rich ethnographic, historical and educational material. There has never been a greater need for a socially and historically informed, yet critical account, of the mismatch between traditional ways, realities of life in Indigenous communities, villages and enclaves, and the forms of education provided in schools. Raymond Nichol, a specialist in Indigenous education and pedagogy, surveys the links, too often disparities, between ethnographic detail of life ‘on the ground’ and the schooling provided by nation states in this vast region. Most importantly, he explores and suggests ways community developers and educators, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, may work to bridge the gaps in social rights, educational and economic development. This is relevant for all Indigenous communities, their survival and development. Many vexed issues are discussed, such as race, ethnicity, identity, discrimination, self-determination, development, and relevant, effective pedagogical, learning and schooling strategies.

coppell early care and education: Out of Darkness Ashley Hope Pérez, 2015-09-01 A Michael L. Printz Honor Book This is East Texas, and there's lines. Lines you cross, lines you don't cross. That clear? New London, Texas. 1937. Naomi Vargas and Wash Fuller know about the lines in East Texas as well as anyone. They know the signs that mark them. They know the people who enforce them. But sometimes the attraction between two people is so powerful it breaks through even the most entrenched color lines. And the consequences can be explosive. Ashley Hope Pérez takes the facts of the 1937 New London school explosion—the worst school disaster in American history—as a backdrop for a riveting novel about segregation, love, family, and the forces that destroy people. [This] layered tale of color lines, love and struggle in an East Texas oil town is a pit-in-the-stomach family drama that goes down like it should, with pain and fascination, like a mix of sugary medicine and artisanal moonshine.—The New York Times Book Review Pérez deftly weaves [an] unflinchingly intense narrative....A powerful, layered tale of forbidden love in times of unrelenting racism.―starred, Kirkus Reviews This book presents a range of human nature, from kindness and love to acts of racial and sexual violence. The work resonates with fear, hope, love, and the importance of memory....Set against the backdrop of an actual historical event, Pérez...gives voice to many long-omitted facets of U.S. history.―starred, School Library Journal

coppell early care and education: Chicano Students and the Courts Richard R. Valencia, 2010-03 In 1925 Adolfo ‘Babe’ Romo, a Mexican American rancher in Tempe, Arizona, filed suit against his school district on behalf of his four young children, who were forced to attend a markedly low-quality segregated school, and won. But Romo v. Laird was just the beginning. Some sources rank Mexican Americans as one of the most poorly educated ethnic groups in the United States. Chicano Students and the Courts is a comprehensive look at this community’s long-standing legal struggle for better schools and educational equality. Through the lens of critical race theory, Valencia details why and how Mexican American parents and their children have been forced to resort to legal action. Chicano Students and the Courts engages the many areas that have spurred Mexican Americans to legal battle, including school segregation, financing, special education, bilingual education, school closures, undocumented students, higher education financing, and high-stakes testing, ultimately situating these legal efforts in the broader scope of the Mexican American community’s overall struggle for the right to an equal education. Extensively researched, and written by an author with firsthand experience in the courtroom as an expert witness in Mexican American education cases, this volume is the first to provide an in-depth understanding of the intersection of litigation and education vis-à-vis Mexican Americans.

coppell early care and education: Why Can't We Just Get Along Anthony Hughes, 2021-08-17 This book combines the history of American descendants of slaves with contemporary events to explain the animus existing between the two Americas - one white, one black. WHY CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG answers Rodney's King's question by delving into the weeds of the true black experience in America - slavery, post-civil war black codes, Jim Crow segregation, Lynching, medical experimentation on men, women, and children, and race riots flaring up in every major city of the country. This unique odyssey illustrates the struggles, tears, and generations of the heartbreak of a race of people whom America would long to forget. Ignoring the fact that African-Americans built large segments of the United States, making it the wealthiest nation in the entire world, the world still views them under the lens of hate, disdain, and mistrust. Though they have proven their worth as a community, the dominant society still places them in a position at the bottom rung of society. Though unpublished when originally written in 2005, the unabridged history lessons included in this book are still applicable today.
