cory koons board of education: Stealing Freedom Along the Mason-Dixon Line Milt Diggins, 2015 Slavery, freedom, and kidnapping in the mid-Atlantic. This is the story of Thomas McCreary, a slave catcher from Cecil County, Maryland. Reviled by some, proclaimed a hero by others, he first drew public attention in the late 1840s for a career that peaked a few years after passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Living and working as he did at the midpoint between Philadelphia, an important center for assisting fugitive slaves, and Baltimore, a major port in the slave trade, his story illustrates in raw detail the tensions that arose along the border between slavery and freedom just prior to the Civil War. McCreary and his community provide a framework to examine slave catching and kidnapping in the Baltimore-Wilmington-Philadelphia region and how those activities contributed to the nation’s political and visceral divide. |

cory koons board of education: Parodies of Ownership Richard L. Schur, 2009-06-04 Richard Schur offers a provocative view of contemporary African American cultural politics and the relationship between African American cultural production and intellectual property law. ---Mark Anthony Neal, Duke University Whites used to own blacks. Now, they accomplish much the same thing by insisting that they 'own' ownership. Blacks shouldn't let them. A culture that makes all artists play by its rules will end up controlling new ideas and stifling change. Richard Schur's fine book explains why. ---Richard Delgado, Seattle University What is the relationship between hip-hop and African American culture in the post--Civil Rights era? Does hip-hop share a criticism of American culture or stand as an isolated and unique phenomenon? How have African American texts responded to the increasing role intellectual property law plays in regulating images, sounds, words, and logos? Parodies of Ownership examines how contemporary African American writers, artists, and musicians have developed an artistic form that Schur terms hip-hop aesthetics. This book offers an in-depth examination of a wide range of contemporary African American painters and writers, including Anna Deavere Smith, Toni Morrison, Adrian Piper, Colson Whitehead, Michael Ray Charles, Alice Randall, and Fred Wilson. Their absence from conversations about African American culture has caused a misunderstanding about the nature of contemporary cultural issues and resulted in neglect of their innovative responses to the post--Civil Rights era. By considering their work as a cross-disciplinary and specifically African American cultural movement, Schur shows how a new paradigm for artistic creation has developed. Parodies of Ownership offers a broad analysis of post--Civil Rights era culture and provides the necessary context for understanding contemporary debates within American studies, African American studies, intellectual property law, African American literature, art history, and hip-hop studies. Weaving together law, literature, art, and music, Schur deftly clarifies the conceptual issues that unify contemporary African American culture, empowering this generation of artists, writers, and musicians to criticize how racism continues to affect our country. Richard L. Schur is Director, Interdisciplinary Studies Center, and Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Drury University. cory koons board of education: Some Aesthetic Decisions Bonnie Clearwater, Francis M. Naumann, Laurette E. McCarthy, 2017 Featuring works by artists including Cory Arcangel, Sophie Calle, Marcel Duchamp, Judy Fiskin, and Jeff Koons the book marks the centenary of an iconic masterpiece. One hundred years ago, Dada artist Marcel Duchamp forever changed the nature of art by anonymously submitting Fountain in 1917, a porcelain urinal signed R. Mutt as an art work to the exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, New York. The show organizers' rejection of Fountain ignited a controversy that persists to today about the definition of art and who gets to pass judgement. NSU Art Museum marks this centenary by organizing S ome Aesthetic Decisions , a show of artworks by Cory Arcangel, John Baldessari, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Sophie Calle, Duchamp, Judy Fiskin, Claire Fontaine, Mike Kelley, Jeff Koons, Joseph Kosuth, Jorge Pardo, Andy Warhol et al, examining issues of beauty, value and judgement. The title of the book, and of the exhibition, is derived from Judy Fiskin's photography series Some Aesthetic Decisions (1973 to 1995). |

cory koons board of education: Working for Justice Stephen John Hartnett, Eleanor Novek, Jennifer K. Wood, 2013-06-01 This collection documents the efforts of the Prison Communication, Activism, Research, and Education collective (PCARE) to put democracy into practice by merging prison education and activism. Through life-changing programs in a dozen states (Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin), PCARE works with prisoners, in prisons, and in communities to reclaim justice from the prison-industrial complex. Based on years of pragmatic activism and engaged teaching, the materials in this volume present a sweeping inventory of how communities and individuals both within and outside of prisons are marshaling the arts, education, and activism to reduce crime and enhance citizenship. Documenting hands-on case studies that emphasize educational initiatives, successful prison-based programs, and activist-oriented analysis, Working for Justice provides readers with real-world answers based on years of pragmatic activism and engaged teaching. Contributors are David Coogan, Craig Lee Engstrom, Jeralyn Faris, Stephen John Hartnett, Edward A. Hinck, Shelly Schaefer Hinck, Bryan J. McCann, Nikki H. Nichols, Eleanor Novek, Brittany L. Peterson, Jonathan Shailor, Rachel A. Smith, Derrick L. Williams, Lesley A. Withers, Jennifer K. Wood, and Bill Yousman. |

Bond, 2005 With its origins in the seventeenth century, the Maryland Court of Appeals is one of the oldest in the United States. Located in the middle of the east coast, it was confronted with most of the key legal issues that affected the colonies and early United States. Bond's was the first history of the court from its origins around 1649 to the adoption of the state's current constitution in 1867. A valuable study, it is based almost entirely on primary sources.
