Following establishment of the NRCME and a transition period, FMCSA would accept as valid only medical examiners' certificates issued by medical examiners listed on the NRCME. The FMCSA is developing the NRCME program to improve highway safety and driver health by requiring that medical examiners be trained and certified to determine effectively whether a commercial motor vehicle driver's health meets FMCSA standards. The program implements requirements in 49 U.S.C. 31149 and supports FMCSA's goal to improve safety and reduce fatalities on our Nation's highways.
