case study of bipolar: Treatment of Bipolar Illness Robert M Post, Gabriele S Leverich, 2008-03-04 “Robert Post is one of the modern pioneers and towering figures in the investigation and treatment of bipolar illness. This volume is a master class in bipolar disorder.”—Russell T. Joffe, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, New Jersey Medical School. This landmark work, based on years of systematic clinical trials and observations at the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) and elsewhere, is the definitive clinical resource on patients with difficult-to-treat bipolar disorder. In the most comprehensive compendium to date, Post and Leverich, both veteran clinicians and expert researchers on bipolar disorder, take a broad, long-term view of the illness rather than simply looking at the short-term manic episodes that so traditionally typify the disorder. In doing so, they present and authoritative primer on the life course and treatment of bipolar disorder, including issues of remission, recurrence, and the nuances so critical to effective clinical decision-making in protracted treatment. Presenting over 60 individual case studies covering a broad range of patients and treatment approaches, Post and Leverich equip clinicians with countless examples to draw on when working with patients in their own practices.

case study of bipolar: Psychoeducation Manual for Bipolar Disorder Francesc Colom, Eduard Vieta, 2006-10-05 Although the mainstay of bipolar therapy is drug treatment, psychoeducation is a technique that has proven to be very effective as an add-on to medication, helping to reduce the number of all types of bipolar recurrences and hospitalisation. The object is to improve patients' understanding of the disorder and therefore their adherence to pharmacotherapy. Based on the highly successful, evidence-based Barcelona program, this book is a pragmatic, therapists' guide for how to implement psychoeducation for bipolar patients. It gives practical guidance for how to conduct a psychoeducation group, using sessions and cases drawn from the Barcelona Psychoeducation Program. Moreover, it provides the reader with a great amount of practical tips and tricks and specific techniques to maximize the benefits of bipolar psychoeducation. The authors formed the first group to show the efficacy of psychoeducation as a maintenance treatment and have a long history of performing bipolar psychoeducation.
case study of bipolar: Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology Kenneth N. Levy, Kristen M. Kelly, William J. Ray, 2018-01-10 Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology presents a broad range of cases drawn from the clinical experience of authors Kenneth N. Levy, Kristen M. Kelly, and William J. Ray to take readers beyond theory into real-life situations. The authors take a holistic approach by including multiple perspectives and considerations, apart from those of just the patient. Each chapter follows a consistent format: Presenting Problems and Client Description; Diagnosis and Case Formulation; Course of Treatment; Outcome and Prognosis/Treatment Follow-up; and Discussion Questions. Providing empirically supported treatments and long-term follow-up in many case studies gives students a deeper understanding of each psychopathology and the effects of treatment over time.

case study of bipolar: Advances in Treatment of Bipolar Disorders Edited by Terence A. Ketter M.D., 2015-04-09 Advances in Treatment of Bipolar Disorders provides clinicians with a well-written and timely guide to the most recent advances in the treatment of patients with this complex disorder. Staying abreast of new research developments and treatment options presents a daunting challenge, but the editor and coauthors have compiled the most important evidence-based findings from controlled studies and U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved indications, facilitating integration of these findings into clinical practice. This volume strives to provide clinicians with the necessary information to enable them to balance the likelihood of benefit (using “number needed to treat” analyses) versus harm (using “number needed to harm” analyses) in order to provide individualized, state-of-the-art, evidence-based care. The most current research findings are complemented by the authors’ extensive personal clinical experiences, resulting in a volume that reflects the most up-to-date thinking about the diagnosis and management of bipolar disorder. Advances in Treatment of Bipolar Disorders belongs in every mental health clinician’s library.

case study of bipolar: Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Institute of Medicine, Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice, Committee on Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, 2008-01-18 Mental disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), constitute an important health care need of veterans, especially those recently separated from service. Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: An Assessment of the Evidence takes a systematic look the efficacy of pharmacologic and psychological treatment modalities for PTSD on behalf of the Department of Veterans Affairs. By reviewing existing studies in order to draw conclusions about the strength of evidence on several types of treatment, the Committee on the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder found that many of these studies were faulty in design and performance, and that relatively few of these studies have been conducted in populations of veterans, despite suggestions that civilian and veteran populations respond differently to various types of treatment. The committee also notes that the evidence is scarce on the acceptability, efficacy, or generalizability of treatment in ethnic and cultural minorities, as few studies stratified results by ethnic background. Despite challenges in the consistency, quality, and depth of research, the committee found the evidence sufficient to conclude the efficacy of exposure therapies in treating PTSD. The committee found the evidence inadequate to determine efficacy of different types of pharmacotherapies, of three different psychotherapy modalities, and of psychotherapy delivered in group formats. The committee also made eight critical recommendations, some in response to the VA's questions related to recovery and the length and timing of PTSD treatment, and others addressing research methodology, gaps in evidence and funding issues.

case study of bipolar: The Treatment of Bipolar Disorder André F. Carvalho, Eduard Vieta, 2017-03-01 Bipolar disorder is a chronic and debilitating mental illness affecting a significant proportion of the world's population. Written by world experts in the field of bipolar disorder, The Treatment of Bipolar Disorder: Integrative Clinical Strategies and Future Directions provides readers with a concise and comprehensive guide to the integrative management of bipolar disorder. This resource contains 31 chapters on the various management choices available, from both established and novel treatment areas, such as psychoeducation, psychotherapeutic interventions, neuromodulatory approaches and novel therapeutic targets. The complexity and diversity of the management choices available makes this a continually evolving field and necessitates forward thinking. By both discussing the current management of bipolar disorder, and the future developments available, this resource provides all clinicians working with patients with bipolar disorder an up-to-date and reflective guide to its management and what the future holds.
case study of bipolar: Biomarkers and Mental Illness Paul C. Guest, 2016-12-02 Employing accessible language throughout, this book covers the history of psychiatric research, the current state-of-the art in psychiatric practice, the physiological systems affected by psychiatric illnesses, the whole-body nature of these diseases and the impact that this aspect has on emerging biomarker discoveries. Further, it provides descriptions of the major specific psychiatric disorders and the special challenges regarding the diagnosis and treatment of each. The book concludes with insights into the latest developments in hand-held biomarker test devices, which can provide diagnostic information in less than 15 minutes in point-of-care settings. This book investigates the emerging use of biomarkers in the study of psychiatric diseases, a topic of considerable importance for a broad range of people including researchers, clinicians, psychiatrists, university students and even those whose lives are affected in some way by a psychiatric illness. The last category is hardly trivial, since a staggering one in three people worldwide show the criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder at some point in their lifetime.

case study of bipolar: Robert Lowell, Setting the River on Fire Kay Redfield Jamison, 2018-02-06 PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • In this magisterial study of the relationship between illness and art, the best-selling author of An Unquiet Mind, Kay Redfield Jamison, brings an entirely fresh understanding to the work and life of Robert Lowell (1917-1977), whose intense, complex, and personal verse left a lasting mark on the English language and changed the public discourse about private matters. In his poetry, Lowell put his manic-depressive illness (now known as bipolar disorder) into the public domain, and in the process created a new and arresting language for madness. Here Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison brings her expertise in mood disorders to bear on Lowell’s story, illuminating not only the relationships between mania, depression, and creativity but also how Lowell’s illness and treatment influenced his work (and often became its subject). A bold, sympathetic account of a poet who was—both despite and because of mental illness—a passionate, original observer of the human condition.

case study of bipolar: Neuroprogression in Psychiatry Flávio Kapczinski, Michael Berk, Pedro Vieira da Silva Magalhães, 2019-03-05 Recent studies regarding the neuropathology of specific neurological disorders suggest that both neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative processes may play a role. However, in contrast to the neurodegeneration seen in neurological disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, the term neuroprogression has been used to describe the neurodevelopmental aspect of pathological brain re-wiring that takes place in the context of severe psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Within psychiatry, patients with severe psychopathology, such as those depressed patients who eventually commit suicide, have been shown to present with increased inflammatory markers in the brain. A similar increase in inflammatory markers is also found in patients with bipolar disorders and schizophrenia. Thus, oxidative stress, inflammation, and changes in growth factors are thought to be the pathways of neuroprogression. Neuroprogression in Psychiatry provides a comprehensive summary of the current developments in the emerging field of neuroprogression. With contributions by leading researchers in the field, this book examines the role of neuroprogression across a wide range of specific psychiatric disorders, with chapters included on major depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder.
case study of bipolar: Mood Genes Samuel H. Barondes, 1999 In Mood Genes, leading psychiatrist and biological researcher Samuel B arondes answers these questions in a way that renders a complex subjec t both exciting and understandable. Focusing on manic depressive illne ss, which affects about one percent of the population and has long bee n known to run in families, Barondes describes the fascinating hunt fo r genes--called mood genes--that influence the inherited vulnerability to severe mood disorders. He builds the compelling story of this hunt on the histories of two families riddled with manic-depression, expla ining what it means to have an inherited predisposition to a severe mo od disorder, how to find the mood genes that are responsible, and what will happen as mood genes are found.

Mood-stabilising medication is routinely prescribed to adults and children alike, with child prescriptions this decade increasing by 400% and overall diagnoses by 4000%. What could explain this explosion of bipolarity?

case study of bipolar: Pediatric Bipolar Disorder Robert L. Findling, Robert A Kowatch, Robert M. Post, 2002-10-10 Bipolar disorders were once considered rare in children and adolescents. A growing body of scientific evidence now suggests that they may be more prevalent in this group than previously believed. At the same time, the practitioner faces significant clinical challenges in both the assessment processes and also the implementation of a treatment plan. A paucity of treatment manuals and pharmacological algorithms providing practical guidance makes the task of the clinician even more difficult, despite the fact that more is known about the assessment, neurobiology and treatment of children and adolescents with bipolar disorder than ever before. Written by three distinguished experts, this book conveys to clinicians all the information currently available in this area. They review both the neuroscience and also the integration of rational, practical, pharmacological and psychosocial interventions. Based on what is known, a sound approach to the assessment of these youngsters can be developed. Similarly, available evidence allows practitioners to ground their treatment protocols solidly on scientific knowledge. Concise and authoritative, Pediatric Bipolar Disorders will give the reader a practical approach to both the art and science of providing the best possible clinical care to children and adolescents with the disorder. This book is written primarily for clinical psychiatrists, but will also be of interest to non-specialist doctors and other members of the health care team.
case study of bipolar: Neurological, Psychiatric, and Developmental Disorders Institute of Medicine, Board on Global Health, Committee on Nervous System Disorders in Developing Countries, 2001-01-01 Brain disordersâ€neurological, psychiatric, and developmentalâ€now affect at least 250 million people in the developing world, and this number is expected to rise as life expectancy increases. Yet public and private health systems in developing countries have paid relatively little attention to brain disorders. The negative attitudes, prejudice, and stigma that often surround many of these disorders have contributed to this neglect. Lacking proper diagnosis and treatment, millions of individual lives are lost to disability and death. Such conditions exact both personal and economic costs on families, communities, and nations. The report describes the causes and risk factors associated with brain disorders. It focuses on six representative brain disorders that are prevalent in developing countries: developmental disabilities, epilepsy, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and stroke. The report makes detailed recommendations of ways to reduce the toll exacted by these six disorders. In broader strokes, the report also proposes six major strategies toward reducing the overall burden of brain disorders in the developing world.

case study of bipolar: Case Studies in Clinical Psychological Science William O'Donohue, Scott O. Lilienfeld, 2013-01-29 In the past few decades clinical science has emerged as a prominent model for training and practice in clinical psychology. This model emphasizes evidence derived from high-quality research and is consistent with the increasingly influential evidence-based movement in medicine, which is a vital step toward making psychotherapy more effective, efficient, and safe. Despite this trend, much current psychological practice is not evidence-based; moreover, there is a marked dearth of resources available to train students and assist practitioners with the challenging goal of translating science into practice. Case Studies in Clinical Psychological Science demonstrates in detail how the clinical science model can be applied to actual cases. Edited by Professors William O'Donohue and Scott O. Lilienfeld, this book's unique structure presents dialogues between leading clinical researchers regarding the treatment of a wide variety of psychological problems, from depression and Alzheimer's disease to Panic Disorder and chronic pain. Chapters describe what evidence-based practice consists of for various clinical problems and are followed by commentary sections in which other leading clinical researchers analyze the case at hand, pointing out additional assessment and treatment options and controversial issues. The chapter authors then reply to the commentary in response sections. By examining the application of scientifically based interventions to actual cases and modeling thoughtful and collegial discussion among prominent clinical researchers, Case Studies in Clinical Psychological Science will assist students, practitioners, and clinical researchers with the crucial task of applying research evidence to psychotherapy and bridging the gap between science and practice.

case study of bipolar: Psychopharmacology Algorithms David Osser, 2020-09-22 Algorithms serve an important purpose in the field of psychopharmacology as heuristics for avoiding the biases and cognitive lapses that are common when prescribing for many conditions whose treatment is based on complex data. Unique in the field, this title compiles twelve papers from the Psychopharmacology Algorithm Project at the Harvard South Shore Psychiatry Residency Training Program and presents practical ways to adopt evidence-based practices into the day-to-day treatment of patients. Psychopharmacology Algorithms is a useful resource for practicing psychiatrists, residents, and fellows, as well as psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychiatric physician assistants who prescribe, advanced practice pharmacists who prescribe, and primary care clinicians. Teachers of psychopharmacology may find it particularly valuable. Researchers in clinical psychopharmacology may find it helpful in identifying important practice areas that are in need of further study.
