Lorenz, 2013-04-17 This book is a contribution to the history of ethology-not a definitive history, but the personal view of a major figure in that story. It is all the more welcome because such a grand theme as ethology calls for a range of perspectives. One reason is the overarching scope of the subject. Two great questions about life that constitute much of biology are How does it work (structure and function)? and How did it get that way (evolu tion and ontogeny)? Ethology addresses the antecedent of it. Of what are we trying to explain the mechanism and development? Surely behav ior, in all its wealth of detail, variation, causation, and control, is the main achievement of animal evolution, the essential consequence of animal structure and function, the raison d' etre of all the rest. Ethology thus spans between and overlaps with the ever-widening circles of ecol ogy over the eons and the ever-narrowing focus of physiology of the neurons. Another reason why the history of ethology needs perspectives is the recency of its acceptance. For such an obviously major aspect of animal biology, it is curious how short a time-less than three decades-has seen the excitement of an active field and a substantial fraternity of work ers, the addition of professors and courses to departments and curricula in biology (still far from universal}, and the normal complement of spe cial journals, symposia, and sessions at congresses. |

Inside you will find a world of wonders. If you are like most people you will flick through and look at the art first. We are proud to feature gallery prints from iconic photographer Kim Weston. The art editor and I met Kim a few years ago at the Henry Miller Library over dinner, and have been trying to get his beautiful photographs in our magazine ever since. It is thanks to the dogged tenacity of River Tabor that we are able to feature work by an astounding member of the Weston dynasty.Tim Youd did an entire art exhibit based on a passage out of Henry Miller's Tropic of Capricorn. We have a poem by Big Sur visitor and raconteur Richard Brautigan. This poem seems to embody the internal landscape of the author. We are fortunate to have so many talented people in the planisphere that is the Henry Miller Memorial library, and are happy to have so many West Coast writers and artists featured in this issue. The Library is an amazing cultural venue, a local's hang out, a bookstore, a concert venue, and a film theatre, but it is also a fragile watershed. Our commitment to keeping this delicate ecosystem in check is part of why this year we have launched into our capital fundraising campaign, in an effort to retrofit Emil White's little cabin into a place that hosts such acts as Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth.I met Thurston on a damp afternoon at the library. I am not an interviewer per say, but I do love listening to people's stories. Thurston Moore and I talked about poetry and art under a persimmon tree, the interview featured herein is the fruit...The East Coast is always well represented since half of our editors live in Brooklyn, which I like to call the poetry capital of the U.S. of A. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie art. Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art. |

Alice Glarden Brand studies the affective aspects of writing, writer's emotional arousal, and processes. Current work in the field is dominated by the cognitive view, the intellectual process of writing. Brand argues that to be complete, theories of writing must include the affective component. Apart from research on writers' block and apprehension, almost no research addresses emotions in writing.
