crase active shooter training: Prepare and Defend Robert L. Snow, 2020-05-08 Prepare and Defend: Keep Yourself and Others Safe from Mass Murder Attacks gives readers the insider knowledge unavailable anywhere else that could ultimately save their lives. Mass murders, though they may seem to be a recent phenomenon, actually have a long history in America. Snow gives a short history of mass murders in the United States, showing while mass murders may be more common today; they were hardly unheard of in the past. Almost weekly, it seems the national news media reports another mass murder: a school shooting, a massacre at a country music concert, a rampage at a nursing home. Why is this happening; who carries out these mass murders; how can we survive if caught up in one; and what can be done by our nation to stop them? In Prepare and Defend: Keep Yourself and Others Safe from Mass Murder Attacks Robert L. Snow answers these tough questions by examining the psychological make-up of mass murderers, allowing the readers to see into the many motivations behind these crimes. He also discusses the various strategies that communities can use to lessen the chances of such events occurring, and what the United States needs to do to prevent these tragedies from continuing. An important aspect of Prepare and Defend is showing readers how to spot a likely mass murder before it happens, and how, if caught up in one, to survive it with the right tactics. Because of the increase in the number of mass murders during the past few decades, police departments everywhere have become equipped and trained on how to respond to them. Readers need to know this information as well so that they can be rescued quickly and safely if ever in the face of this kind of situation. Depending on what kind of mass murder event occurs, there are a number of strategies that can significantly lessen a person’s chances of becoming a victim. With the benefit of many years as a police office, as well as response training for mass murder episode, Snow shows readers important strategies and how to use them. |
crase active shooter training: Active Shooter Events and Response John P. Blair, Terry Nichols, David Burns, John R. Curnutt, 2013-06-12 The Columbine tragedy on April 20, 1999 began a new era in law enforcement as it became apparent that the police response to such mass shootings must be drastically altered. By the time the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, outdated police response strategies had been replaced with new, aggressive tactics used by the first officers on the scene. The frequency with which these events occur remind us time and again about the importance of training and preparing for these critical situations before they occur in our own backyards. Active Shooter Events and Response is one of the first attempts to not only discuss historic active shooter events, but also to actually dissect some of them—empowering law enforcement professionals by leveraging the essential knowledge and experience of those who have gone before us. The book also offers insight into the training methodologies and strategies used to prepare our nation’s first responders to address the active shooter threat. In addition, the authors discuss the clear and present threat of terrorist organizations using these mass shooter tactics on American soil—similar to the attacks in Beslan, Russia and Mumbai, India. Written by members of the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University, this book is the culmination of more than a decade’s worth of training and research into active shooter events and represents state-of-the-art, evidence-based best practices. |
crase active shooter training: Evaluating Police Tactics J. Pete Blair, M. Hunter Martaindale, 2014-09-25 The approach that should be used by law enforcement officers in order to safely and effectively enter a room is a point of contention among many police trainers. Based on five experiments conducted over a two-year period, Evaluating Police Tactics demonstrates that the conventional wisdom is not optimal. Using the scientific method to systematically assess current room entry philosophies and techniques employed by police, Evaluating Police Tactics offers suggestions for examining the current philosophies and determining how patrol officers can enter scenes of ongoing violence, find the shooter, and stop the killing as safely and effectively as possible. About the Real-World Criminology Series More than just textbooks, the short books in the Real-World Criminology series are designed to be of interest to particular fields within criminology. They can be policy primers, spurring innovations in policing and corrections, theoretical works dealing with policy implications, or program evaluations incorporating theoretical foundations. Each book covers something that is happening –or should be happening—in the world of criminal justice. |
crase active shooter training: Lockdown Drills Jaclyn Schildkraut, Amanda B. Nickerson, 2022-09-06 A comprehensive resource on what lockdown drills are, why they are necessary, and how best to conduct them. The first book to offer a comprehensive examination of lockdown drills in K–12 schools, Lockdown Drills balances research findings with practical applications and implications. Schildkraut and Nickerson, school safety experts with complementary backgrounds in criminology and school psychology, review the historical precedents for lockdown drills, distinguish school lockdowns from other emergency procedures (such as active shooter drills), explain why they are conducted, present evidence-based research on their effectiveness, and describe how to conduct them according to best practices. Proponents of lockdown drills as a life-saving necessity, the authors help to bring much-needed standardization to how these drills are studied and conducted. The authors present common arguments for and against the inclusion of lockdown drills in emergency preparedness efforts, balancing their discussion of the perceptions and psychological impacts of lockdown drills with scholarly research on the extent to which lockdown drills improve how effectively individuals respond to a potential threat. Placing lockdown drills in the larger context of school safety and preparedness, they examine the broader implications for policymakers. Finally, they emphasize that drills, of which lockdowns are only one type, are just a part of the complex school safety puzzle. Ensuring that schools are safe places for students and educators begins long before a crisis occurs and continues through the days, weeks, and years of recovery following a crisis. |

crase active shooter training: Survive a Shooting Alain Burrese, 2018-03-15 Active Shooter is all too common a phrase in the news these days. It is sad and terrible that we even have something to describe these horrific acts. The reality is that we live in a world that can, at times, be quite dangerous. The good news is that you do have options. You don't have to be a helpless victim! There are things you can learn to increase your survivability! This book will teach you how you can survive. Alain's unique methodology of Escape, Deny, and Attack Back is based on the central principle: you have to MOVE! Surviving a shooting is not a linear process as others would suggest, and this book will teach you when and how to Escape safely, how to Deny the shooter access to you if you can't escape, and how to successfully work alone, or as a team, to Attack Back and bring the killer down. Hiding and hoping isn't a plan and will likely get you killed. Learn to survive! This book is designed to save lives! Advance Praise: Alain Burrese has written the definitive guide to mass shootings-and how to maximize your chances of surviving one. And the common-sense steps he recommends aren't just relevant for shootings-they're well calibrated to help you keep yourself and your family safe generally. - Barry Eisler I have been studying the problem of active killer response for more than two decades. I've read every book available on the subject and have both attended and taught countless classes on the topic. Without question, Alain's book is the absolute best reference for active killer response available on the market today. His advice is both thorough and driven by industry best practices. If you want to learn how to prevail in an active killer attack, you need this book in your library. - Greg Ellifritz Way back in the 1990's, Alain Burrese established himself as a leading thinker in self-defense circles when he published Hard-Won Wisdom from the School of Hard Knocks. In the intervening years, Alain has continued to learn, grow, research, publish, and teach. I had the privilege to read a draft of his latest book, Survive a Shooting, which you now hold in your hands. Succinct, clear and accurate are just what I expect from Alain. Survive A Shooting offers something else. Instead of jacking up the fear to create a market, Alain took a potentially terrifying subject and created a calming, empowering book. Yes, it's bad Alain points out. But there are things you can do. You are not helpless. That's the defining message of this very useful book. I hate touchy feely jargon, but Survive a Shooting is empowering. The kind of book that leaves you a little stronger, a little more ready. - Rory Miller Survive a Shooting is a must read for anyone that may have to engage an active shooter or mass murderer. Alain did a great job detailing the history of mass shooting situations and what we must be prepared for in the future; as well as what we can do to mitigate this ominous threat. - Dr. Dale Comstock The CIA trains operatives to survive in hostile environments. Survive A Shooting trains people to survive active threats. Putting the knowledge in this book to use could literally save your life. - Jason Hanson No one wants to be a victim, yet learning how to successfully defend against an armed threat can be a significant challenge. Nevertheless, with the right training it's a surmountable one. If I was going to put my life (or a member of my family's) in someone else's hands during an active shooting, I can think of no better person to safeguard it than Alain Burrese. His knowledge, experience, and pragmatic approach create powerful, trustworthy advice that everyone must know. - Lawrence Kane |

[McDermott] can move from barely controlled hilarity to the brink of rage to aching tenderness in a single breath. -- Marya Hornbacher, New York Times Book Review Zack McDermott, a 26-year-old Brooklyn public defender, woke up one morning convinced he was being filmed, Truman Show-style, as part of an audition for a TV pilot. Every passerby was an actor; every car would magically stop for him; everything he saw was a cue from The Producer to help inspire the performance of a lifetime. After a manic spree around Manhattan, Zack, who is bipolar, was arrested on a subway platform and admitted to Bellevue Hospital. So begins the story of Zack's freefall into psychosis and his desperate, poignant, often hilarious struggle to claw his way back to sanity. It's a journey that will take him from New York City back to his Kansas roots and to the one person who might be able to save him, his tough, big-hearted Midwestern mother, nicknamed the Bird, whose fierce and steadfast love is the light in Zack's dark world. Before his odyssey is over, Zack will be tackled by guards in mental wards, run naked through cornfields, receive secret messages from the TV, befriend a former Navy Seal and his talking stuffed monkey, and see the Virgin Mary in the whorls of his own back hair. But with the Bird's help, he just might have a shot at pulling through, starting over, and maybe even meeting a partner who can love him back, bipolar and all. Introducing an electrifying new voice, Gorilla and the Bird is a raw and unforgettable account of a young man's unraveling and the relationship that saves him. |

This report tries to create space for a careful conversation about the challenge of paying for policing. It starts by asking two questions. First, what is driving up police expend.? Are police departments growing and providing more services to more people, are the costs of providing these same services simply going up, or are other factors responsible for the increase? Second, what have cities and their residents received in return for their investment in policing? Are there fewer crimes, a greater sense of safety and more satisfaction with police services? What has happened to the bottom line in policing? Illus. This is a print on demand report. |

crase active shooter training: Restoring Sanctuary Sandra L. Bloom, Brian Farragher, 2013-01-04 This is the third in a trilogy of books that chronicle the revolutionary changes in our mental health and human service delivery systems that have conspired to disempower staff and hinder client recovery. Creating Sanctuary documented the evolution of The Sanctuary Model therapeutic approach as an antidote to the personal and social trauma that clients bring to child welfare agencies, psychiatric hospitals, and residential facilities. Destroying Sanctuary details the destructive role of organizational trauma in the nation's systems of care. Restoring Sanctuary is a user-friendly manual for organizational change that addresses the deep roots of toxic stress and illustrates how to transform a dysfunctional human service system into a safe, secure, trauma-informed environment. At its heart, The Sanctuary Model represents an organizational value system that is committed to seven principles, which serve as anchors for decision making at all levels: non-violence, emotional intelligence, social learning, democracy, open communication, social responsibility, and growth and change. The Sanctuary Model is not a clinical intervention; rather, it is a method for creating an organizational culture that can more effectively provide a cohesive context within which healing from psychological and socially derived forms of traumatic experience can be addressed. Chapters are organized around the seven Sanctuary commitments, providing step-by-step, realistic guidance on creating and sustaining fundamental change. Restoring Sanctuary is a roadmap to recovery for our nation's systems of care. It explores the notion that organizations are living systems themselves and as such they manifest various degrees of health and dysfunction, analogous to those of individuals. Becoming a truly trauma-informed system therefore requires a process of reconstitution within helping organizations, top to bottom. A system cannot be truly trauma-informed unless the system can create and sustain a process of understanding itself. |

crase active shooter training: We Can All Do Better Bill Bradley, 2012-05-08 Bill Bradley is arguably one of the most well-versed public figures of our time. The eighteen-year New Jersey Senator, financial and investment adviser, Olympic and NBA athlete, national radio host, and bestselling author has lived in the United States as both political insider and outsider, national sports celebrity and behind-the-scenes confidante, leader and teammate. His varied experiences help to inform his unique and much-sought-after point of view on Washington and the country at large. InWe Can All Do Better, for the first time since the financial meltdown and since the worst of the intensifying political gridlock, Bradley offers his own concise, powerful, and highly personal review of the state of the nation. Bradley argues that government is not the problem. He criticizes the role of money and politics, explains how continuing on our existing foreign policy, electoral, and economic paths will mean a diminished future, and lays out exactly what needs to be done to reverse course. Breaking from the intransigent long-held viewpoints of both political parties, and with careful attention to our nation’s history, Bradley passionately lays out his narrative. He offers a no-holds-barred prescription on subjects including job creation, deficit reduction, education, and immigration. While equally critical of the approaches of the Tea Party and Occupy Movements, he champions the power of individual Americans to organize, speak out, bridge divisions, and he calls on the media to assume a more responsible role in our national life. As this moving call to arms reminds us, we can all—elected officials, private citizens, presidents—do a better job of moving our country forward. Bradley is perhaps the best guide imaginable, with his firsthand knowledge of governments’ inner-workings, the country’s diversity, and the untapped potential of the American people. |

crase active shooter training: Active Shooter Kevin Doss, Charles Shepherd, 2015-08-17 According to Pinkerton—the leading provider of risk management services in the world—workplace violence is second only to cybersecurity as the top threat faced by organizations today. Incidents involving active shooters in the workplace are on the rise and becoming more violent and deadly. Active Shooter provides the tools necessary to identify potential violent individuals, along with the options and responses needed to save lives, reduce corporate liability, and recover from an active shooter event should it happen. Active Shooter begins with a brief history of active shooters and how they have changed over time. It shows why many perpetrators initiate attacks, what they often are thinking, and some of the indicators that could have been identified prior to the attack. The book shows how to develop an active shooter program in an organization, walking readers through the entire process including training exercises to test the efficiency of the program. crase active shooter training: The Cornish Overseas Philip Payton, 2020-02-17 In this fully revised and up-dated edition of The Cornish Overseas, Philip Payton draws upon almost two decades of additional research undertaken by historians the world over since the first paperback version of this book was published in 2005. Now published by University of Exeter Press, this edition of Philip Payton’s classic history of Cornwall’s ‘great emigration’ takes account of numerous new sources to present a comprehensive, definitive picture of the Cornish diaspora. The Cornish Overseas begins by identifying some of the classic themes of Cornish emigration history, including Cornwall’s ‘emigration culture’ and ‘emigration trade’, and goes on to sketch early Cornish settlement in North America and Australia. The book then examines in detail the upsurge in Cornish emigration after 1815, showing how Cornwall became swiftly one of the great emigration regions of Europe. Discoveries of silver, copper and gold drew Cornish miners to Latin America, while Cornish agriculturalists were attracted to the United States and Canada. The discoveries of copper in South Australia and in Michigan during the 1840s offered new destinations for the emigrant Cornish, as did the Californian gold rush in 1849 and the Victorian gold rush in Australia in 1851. The crash of copper-mining in Cornwall in 1866 sped further waves of emigrants to countries as disparate as New Zealand and South Africa. In each of these places the Cornish remained distinctive as ‘Cousin Jacks’ and ‘Cousin Jennys’, establishing their own communities and making important contributions to the social, political and economic development of the new worlds. By 1914, however, Cornwall was no longer the international centre of mining expertise, the mantle having passed to America, Australia and South Africa, and Cornish emigration had dwindled as a result. Nonetheless, the Cornish at home and abroad remained aware of their global transnational identity, an identity that has been revitalised in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. crase active shooter training: Disarm and Disable Joseph B. Walker, 2020-03-30 In a perfect world, no one would indiscriminately use a firearm to shoot and kill any number of innocent people – and if they tried, law enforcement would be there to stop the killer. But we live in an imperfect world where attackers normally target unsuspecting victims. Trained professionals are seldom there to fight back. When seconds count, it’s imperative for everyday citizens to learn how to disarm and disable attackers. In this guide, learn how to: • Take evasive and life-saving measures from sniper fire; • Avoid the sixteen deadly errors of active shooter defense training; • Utilize tactics and techniques to maximize your chances of survival during an active shooting; • Ambush, disarm and disable the shooter should you come face to face. This guide was created for the worst-case scenarios if you were to find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time – and no trained professionals are there to help. While escaping a kill zone is one option, there may come a time when the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to ambush, Disarm and Disable the shooter. |
