However, before this issue can be addressed directly, it is necessary to ask what is meant by the word 'context' ?. The first answer which comes to mind is likely to be something along the following lines: A context is a framework (or background) of information with respect to whieh more specific 'items' ofinformation can be identified and manipulated. This answer may be correct, but it begs a fundamental question. Why should it be necessary to subdivide information into specific items of information, and the more global backgrounds, or frameworks? Aubrey, 1997 Various interested bodies (i.e., National Park Service, Cape Cod Commission, and the Town of Orleans) charged with management of the Nauset Marsh system on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, commissioned a study of the estuarine circulation within the Nauset system. Recent significant morphological changes in the system have changed mixing processes and residence times for the embayment. This study specifically addressed the differing water circulation and residence times arising from a migrating single inlet (dominant condition) and dual inlet (1992-1996) situations. These residence times are to be used by the Cape Cod Commission to identify nitrogen-sensitive sub-embayments based on various assumptions of build-out and nutrient loading. The Nauset Marsh system has experienced considerable development in recent years; proper management of this resource area requires knowledge of the consequences of such development. This study provides a defensible basis for evaluating nutrient loading and potential eutrophication arising from development in the watershed around Nauset embayment. However, since morphological changes occur on a rapid basis in this area, the issue of residence time should be re-examined periodically. For instance, rapid onshore migration of the southern barrier beach is threatening closure of the south channel, a condition which could adversely affect water quality in Nauset Harbor in the near future. A process should be established to examine the sensitivity of residence times for rapidly changing morphology.

In 1968, de Groat and Ryall published a group of papers in the Journal of Physiology in which modern quantitative electrophysiological techniques were applied to the study ofthe reflexes that regulate bladder Junction. These papers represent alandmark in the history of bladder neurophysiology, forming a dividing li ne between old and new. The earlier techniques of lesioning and stimulation of nervous structures yielded mainly qualitative information which was open to criticism because of lack of precise control over what was actually being destroyed or stimulated. Much of this earlier work was reviewed in an authoritative volume by Bors and Comarr in 1971, entitled Neurolqgical Urology. The 16 years have seen great advances in our understanding ofthe control oflower subsequent urinary tract function.

Davis, 1994 This book originated at a small and informal workshop held in December of 1992 in Idyllwild, a relatively secluded resort village situated amid forests in the San Jacinto Mountains above Palm Springs in Southern California. Eighteen colleagues from a broad range of disciplines, including biophysics, electrophysiology, neuroanatomy, psychophysics, clinical studies, mathematics and computer vision, discussed 'Large Scale Models of the Brain, ' that is, theories and models that cover a broad range of phenomena, including early and late vision, various memory systems, selective attention, and the neuronal code underlying figure-ground segregation and awareness (for a brief summary of this meeting, see Stevens 1993). The bias in the selection of the speakers toward researchers in the area of visual perception reflects both the academic background of one of the organizers as well as the (relative) more mature status of vision compared with other modalities.
