These new channels of communication, such as virtual learning environments (VLEs), online forums, and mobile devices, make it very necessary to protect data by implementing an efficient policy that is adhered to and carried out. The Irish Data Protection Act of 1988 was enacted as a result of this consideration. It was updated in 2003 to conform with the European Union Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC, and all of its provisions are still in force, with the exception of Section 4, which deals with compelled subject access. Section 4 is the only section that has been removed from existence. To bring to your notice a few of the most significant features of the Irish Data Protection Act 1988 the purpose of this article is to raise awareness about those aspects. In addition, a comprehensive analysis of the updated act's application at an Irish higher education institution will be carried out, with consideration given to recent technological advancements like as cloud computing and biometrics. The existing policy and the manner in which it protects both students and teachers in Ireland's higher education system will be the topic of the final debate. In addition, over the course of the discussion, regulations that are applicable to all Institutes and have the potential to be generalised will be proposed for inclusion in this form of policy. The objective of this chapter is to highlight the significance of adhering to Data Protection laws. This is not only because colleges are obligated to do so, but also because other aspects, such as the rights of staff and students, the potential loss of trust that could result from breaking the law, and the employability of students, are also significant. |
