dallas college study abroad: My Soviet Youth Irina Rodríguez, 2019-09-12 Putting on gas masks and learning how to shoot Kalashnikov rifles in grade school made Soviet children fear possible attack by Cold War enemies. But a more prosaic invasion of Colorado beetles in the 1980s turned out to be a far more real threat to Soviet families. Many had to master farming when the state, near its demise, no longer had the finances to pay salaries. One of the last generation of Soviet teenagers who tasted the political restrictions and propaganda, and the benefits and deficits of the communist state, the author recalls her early years in a Soviet school, a Young Pioneer inauguration ceremony, work on a collective farm, her family's plot of land and their fights against invasive insects, and her first breaths of post-Soviet freedom, which brought economic havoc and bitter disappointments, along with new hopes. |

dallas college study abroad: Promoting Intercultural Agility and Leadership Development at Home and Abroad for First-Year Students Stauff, Jon, Blondin, Jill E., 2024-02-08 Global learning at home and education abroad programming designed for first-year students is extremely important for promoting intercultural competency, language acquisition, and the ability to negotiate complex systems to achieve global solutions. Through highlights of the work of faculty and international educators who create global learning experiences for students beginning postsecondary studies, we can begin to challenge many long-held assumptions about first-year student programming in international education. By reviewing case studies of successful approaches to this programming and its assessment, Promoting Intercultural Agility and Leadership Development at Home and Abroad for First-Year Students is a practical guide for international educators, including faculty and global learning staff, aimed at promoting global learning experiences for first-year students on university campuses. This publication showcases innovative approaches to fostering cultural agility and provides a toolbox for building robust global learning experiences for students, both at home and abroad. Intercultural competency skills can be developed over time, which equip students with experiences that are beneficial for their roles in academics, student development, and future career preparation. With the help of the research within this book, educators can design global learning programs for first-year university students that both build upon the assets students bring from secondary studies and introduce new concepts to students as they transition to university coursework. |

dallas college study abroad: Entrepreneurship Programs and the Modern University Michael H. Morris, Donald F. Kuratko, Jeffrey R. Cornwall, 2013-08-01 At IUs Kelley School of Business, we believe in the power of entrepreneurial thinking, with a relentless pursuit of excellence in the research and teaching of entrepreneurship and innovation across our entire campus. This book on academic entrepreneurship offers one of the most comprehensive approaches to understanding the framework and strategies for building effective entrepreneurship programs within universities today. I truly believe all universities, regardless of their current stage of development of their entrepreneurship programs, will materially benefit from the ideas in this book. Daniel C. Smith, former Dean, Kelley School of Business, Indiana University and current CEO, Indiana University Foundation, US I am a believer in the concept of the entrepreneurial university, and think our institutions of higher learning must learn to think and act in more entrepreneurial ways. The kind of entrepreneurial culture which this book champions can transform student lives, invigorate university campuses, and make a fundamental difference in our communities. Burns Hargis, President, Oklahoma State University, US After more than 30 years of impressive growth, what have we learned about building world-class entrepreneurship programs within universities? After tracing the evolution of entrepreneurship within institutions of higher learning, the authors explore the key elements that constitute a comprehensive entrepreneurship program. Best practices at leading universities and differing kinds of academic environments are highlighted. They examine multiple aspects of program management and infrastructure, including curriculum and degree program development, where entrepreneurship is administratively housed, how it is organized, and approaches to staffing and resource acquisition. The perspectives shared in the book enable university presidents, entrepreneurship students, provosts, deans, entrepreneurship program directors, faculty members, and others to better capitalize upon the empowering and transformative potential of entrepreneurship. |

Long, Bret Linford, 2023-06-06 This volume offers a comprehensive snapshot of the breadth of empirical research currently being conducted on the second language acquisition of sociolinguistic variation in Spanish during study abroad. Research on this topic spans diverse methodological approaches, types of programs, linguistic structures, and learner characteristics, which is reflected in the contributions in this volume. This diversity of approaches illustrates how the second language development of sociolinguistic variation during study abroad depends crucially on a number of linguistic and extralinguistic factors and can be measured in distinct ways. Thus, this collection will be an indispensable resource to researchers and students of second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, education, and other fields interested in language development during study abroad. |

dallas college study abroad: The Lost Paratroopers of Normandy Stephen G. Rabe, 2022-11-10 The fateful days and weeks surrounding 6 June 1944 have been extensively documented in histories of the Second World War, but less attention has been paid to the tremendous impact of these events on the populations nearby. The Lost Paratroopers of Normandy tells the inspiring yet heartbreaking story of ordinary people who did extraordinary things in defense of liberty and freedom. On D-Day, when transport planes dropped paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions hopelessly off-target into marshy waters in northwestern France, the 900 villagers of Graignes welcomed them with open arms. These villagers – predominantly women – provided food, gathered intelligence, and navigated the floods to retrieve the paratroopers' equipment at great risk to themselves. When the attack by German forces on 11 June forced the overwhelmed paratroopers to withdraw, many made it to safety thanks to the help and resistance of the villagers. In this moving book, historian Stephen G. Rabe, son of one of the paratroopers, meticulously documents the forgotten lives of those who participated in this integral part of D-Day history. |

dallas college study abroad: New Developments in Pathways Towards Diversity and Inclusion in STEM: A United States Perspective Alexander Gates, Juan Gilbert, Chris Botanga, Kim Nguyen, Bonita London, 2022-10-17 The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program of the US National Science Foundation has been a primary force for raising the success and graduation of minority students in STEM for 30 years. Increasing the number of underrepresented students earning baccalaureate degrees, and entering graduate school in STEM is the goal of LSAMP. This goal has been nearly achieved through the formation of alliances of degree granting institutions of higher learning, varying from community colleges to major research institutions. Currently there are 59 alliances including more than 400 institutions. LSAMP is responsible for more than 650,000 bachelor’s degrees earned by minority students in STEM. The papers for this Research Topic should focus on the use of LSAMP activities, programs and collaborations to develop pathways to success and graduation of STEM majors from minority groups that underrepresented in STEM. These pathways can include any segment from pre-college through graduate school. Areas of special interest include mentoring, research experiences, transitions between levels and novel approaches for retention. The studies should be research based and rigorous. They can be pure research studies, curriculum and design or literature reviews but they must be at a cutting edge level and be subject to detailed review and assessment. |
