A primeira competição ocorreu em 1930, tendo a participação de 13 equipes convidadas, tendo o Uruguai como país-sede e como campeão. Com o crescimento da competição, hoje é necessário passar por uma etapa classificatória de dois anos de duração, que conta com a participação de aproximadamente duzentas seleções de países, para participar do campeonato. A primeira partida internacional de futebol ocorreu em 1872 entre Inglaterra e Escócia. Nessa época, o futebol raramente era praticado fora do Reino Unido. O início da expansão do futebol internacional se deu com a criação da FIFA, em Maio de 1904, então formada por sete países do continente europeu. Com a crescente popularidade, o futebol participou dos Jogos Olímpicos de Verão de 1900, 1904 e 1906 como um esporte de demonstração, sem direito à medalha, sendo oficialmente introduzido nos Jogos Olímpicos de Verão de 1908. A seleção amadora da Inglaterra foi campeã em 1908 e 1912. A FIFA tentou organizar um torneio entre seleções fora do contexto olímpico em 1906, na Suíça, mas a tentativa fracassou. Using historical, archaeological and epigraphic evidence, this study argues that the fracturing of the empire's political unity also led to a fracturing of Roman identity along political, cultural and religious lines, as individuals who continued to feel 'Roman' but who were no longer living under imperial rule sought to redefine what it was that connected them to their fellow Romans elsewhere. The resulting definitions of Romanness could overlap, but were not always mutually reinforcing. But these stories are also interesting as instances of a concept and practice thas has received little critical attention so far, namely 'analogy', the writing and, above all, recognition of 'similar' stories. How to account for the literary practice that enables us to perceive stories as similar, c.q. analogous? This original study sets out to explore this phenomenon, first tentatively vis-?)vis other terms and practices (Translation, Borrowing, Adaptation, Version) and then, in the major part of the book, in a pragmatic-structuralist analysis of four salient components of narrative--Plot, Character, Thematics, and Genre--each illustrated with examples taken from Chaucer's fabliaux and their analogues in various European languages.In each of the four chapters the key-issue is Categorisation and Hertog traces its evolution and usefulness a a concept from Wittgenstein's family resemblances' and Zadeh's 'fuzzy set theory' to E. Rosch's Prototype theory.
