december in other languages: The Pronunciation of English by Speakers of Other Languages Radek Skarnitzl, Jan Volín, 2018-06-11 This book focuses on an increasingly attractive, yet controversial topic of non-native accentedness in speech. The contributors here are aware of the fact that the mechanisms and effects of pronunciation are far too complex to allow for strong and definite claims of any sort, but present research leading to useful answers to relevant questions. The book contributes to the deeper understanding of many aspects of foreign-accented English with reference to clearly described empirical evidence. The volume brings together fourteen chapters organized into four subdivisions, covering conceptual and perceptual issues, questions of segmental and suprasegmental pronunciation features, and methodological and didactic recommendations. As such, it provides a cross-sectional view of the current phonetic and didactic empirical research into the pronunciation of non-native English.

december in other languages: The Position of the German Language in the World Ulrich Ammon, 2019-08-08 The Position of the German Language in the World focuses on the global position of German and the factors which work towards sustaining its use and utility for international communication. From the perspective of the global language constellation, the detailed data analysis of this substantial research project depicts German as an example of a second-rank language. The book also provides a model for analysis and description of international languages other than English. It offers a framework for strengthening the position of languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Spanish and others and for countering exaggerated claims about the global monopoly position of English. This comprehensive handbook of the state of the German language in the world was originally published in 2015 by Walter de Gruyter in German and has been critically acclaimed. Suitable for scholars and researchers of the German language, the handbook shows in detail how intricately and thoroughly German and other second-rank languages are tied up with a great number of societies and how these statistics support or weaken the languages’ functions and maintenance.
december in other languages: The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Ben Saul, David Kinley, Jaqueline Mowbray, 2014-03-06 Economic, social and cultural rights are finally coming of age. This book brings together all essential documents, materials, and case law relating to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) - one of the most important human rights instruments in international law - and its Optional Protocol. This book presents extracts from primary materials alongside critical commentary and analysis, placing the documents in their wider context and situating economic, social, and cultural rights within the broader human rights framework. There is increasing interest internationally, regionally, and in domestic legal systems in the protection of economic, social, and cultural rights. The Optional Protocol of 2008 allows for individual communications to be made to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights after its entry into force in 2013. At the regional level, socio-economic rights are well embedded in human rights systems in Europe, Africa and the Americas. At the national level, constitutions and courts have increasingly regarded socio-economic rights as justiciable, narrowing the traditional divide with civil and political rights. This book contextualises these developments in the context of the ICESCR. It provides detailed analysis of the ICESCR structured around its articles, drawing on national as well as international case law and materials, and containing all of the key primary materials in its extensive appendices. This book is indispensible for the judiciary, human rights practitioners, government legal advisers and agencies, national human rights institutions, international organisations, regional human rights bodies, NGOs and human rights activists, academics, and students alike.

december in other languages: Global Englishes and Change in English Language Teaching Nicola Galloway, 2017-05-08 Global Englishes and Change in English Language Teaching analyses the impact of current ELT practice, bringing together research from the fields of Global Englishes and ELT to provide suggestions for the implementation of a Global Englishes for Language Teaching curriculum. Calling for a critical re-examination of ELT to ensure that classroom practice reflects how the English language functions as a lingua franca, this book: highlights that multilingualism, not monolingualism, is the norm in today's globalised world, and that 'non-native' English speakers far outnumber 'native' English speakers; showcases the author’s research into English language learner attitudes towards English and ELT in relation to Global Englishes; makes practical suggestions for pedagogical change within ELT. Global Englishes and Change in English Language Teaching is key reading for postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of TESOL/ELT and Global Englishes.
